Eid 2026 in India — When Is It, What to Expect, and Why This Year Feels Different

Eid is almost here. Ramzan started on February 19 this year, and if the math holds — 29 or 30 days of fasting — we're looking at Eid somewhere around March 20 or 21. [web:318]

The honest answer, though, is nobody knows the exact date yet. That's not a cop-out. That's literally how it works. Eid falls on the first day of Shawwal, and Shawwal begins when the crescent moon is sighted after sunset on the 29th day of Ramzan. In India, the official moon sighting committees — and there are several, state-level and central — will look for that crescent on the evening of March 19 or 20. If they see it, Eid is the next morning. If clouds block the view or the moon isn't visible, it shifts by a day.

Most calendar apps and government holiday lists are marking Saturday, March 21 as the tentative Eid date for India. [web:318] Some regions and communities may observe it on March 20. The safest thing to do is wait for your local mosque's announcement on the moon sighting night — most of them post it on WhatsApp or their Facebook page within an hour of the decision.

The Part People Always Forget — Zakat-ul-Fitr

Before you go for Eid namaz, there's something that has to happen first. Zakat-ul-Fitr — the obligatory charity of Ramzan — has to be paid for every member of your household before the prayer begins. Not after. Before.

The amount in India this year is around ₹80–120 per person, depending on which organisation or mosque you follow for the calculation. It's meant to go to people who genuinely can't afford to celebrate Eid — so it reaches them in time to buy something for the day.

It's one of those aspects of Eid that gets overshadowed by the sewaiyyan and new clothes and family gatherings, but it's actually non-negotiable in terms of religious obligation. If you haven't sorted it yet, do it in the next week.

Eid Namaz — When and Where

Eid namaz is held between roughly 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM on Eid morning. The exact timing is set by your local mosque, not by any central body. Major mosques in your city will announce their timing the night before — again, social media is your friend here.

In bigger cities — Delhi's Jama Masjid, Mumbai's Minara Masjid, Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid, Lucknow's Asafi Imambara — the congregations run into lakhs. If you plan to attend one of these, arrive at least 45 minutes early and wear comfortable clothes because the ground tends to get crowded fast.

If your city mosque is smaller, half an hour early is usually fine.

What Makes This Eid Slightly Different

March 21 is a Saturday. Which means Eid lands on a weekend — no need to take a Monday off, no rushing back before the holiday ends. The whole day is genuinely free.

That doesn't sound like much but if you've ever had to cut an Eid lunch short to catch the 6 PM train back to your work city, you'll understand why a weekend Eid is something to be genuinely thankful for.

Eid Mubarak — whenever that crescent shows up.
